The East Carolina women’s basketball team has spent the last few months gearing up for the start of the 2012-13 season as well as volunteering their time in the Greenville community. Off the court, the Pirates have made a difference through several community outreach projects such as volunteering at the 5th Annual Splash and Dash Kid’s Triathlon, Take Back the Night, the Leo Jenkins Cancer Center Pink Ribbon Run, and much more.

“I’m proud of the girls’ commitment to our community,” Head Coach Heather Macy stated. “They truly understand that our journey is bigger than themselves.”

Throughout the month of September, the Pirates lent their time to a trio of different community service events beginning with volunteering at the Pitt County Animal Shelter on September 8. In addition to returning to campus and beginning classes, the ECU women’s basketball team spent the day at the 5th Annual Splash and Dash Kid’s Triathlon. The Pirates came back the following day to speak out against violence toward women at Take Back the Night, an event held at East Carolina University on September 24.

Despite beginning their first official practice of the season on October 1, the Pirates’ community service did not suffer. The team spent October 19, volunteering at the North Carolina Senior games in the 3-on-3 tournament. That evening, the Pirates made an appearance at the Leo Jenkins Cancer Center Survivors Dinner. Two days later, the squad participated in the Leo Jenkins Cancer Center Pink Ribbon Run to support the fight against cancer.

“Our Lady Pirates appreciate all the support they receive from the Greenville community,” Eric McCabe, Director of Basketball Operations, said. “Being able to give back by participating in many types of service opportunities is something the team enjoys and looks forward to.”

With the season just two weeks away, the Pirates are still out and about in the Greenville community as they spent last Monday helping register families for Christmas aid at the Salvation Army.

The ECU women’s basketball team opens the season at William & Mary on Friday, Nov. 9, at 5 p.m. The Pirates’ home opener is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 11, at 5 p.m. at Minges Coliseum where they will host St. Andrews.
